
Nigerian chess master and founder of Chess in Slums Africa, Tunde Onakoya, has achieved a monumental feat by setting a new Guinness World Record for the longest continuous chess marathon. The event took place in New York City’s Times Square, where Onakoya played chess non-stop for 60 hours, surpassing the previous record of 56 hours, 9 minutes, and 37 seconds held by Norwegian players Hallvard Haug Flatebø and Sjur Ferkingstad since 2018 . 
A Mission Beyond the Board
Onakoya’s record-breaking endeavor was not solely about setting a new milestone in the chess world. The chess marathon commenced on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, at 11:30 AM EST (4:30 PM WAT) and concluded on Saturday, April 20, 2024. Onakoya was joined by U.S. chess master Shawn Martinez, adhering to Guinness World Record guidelines that require two players to participate continuously for the entire duration. The rules permitted a five-minute break for every hour of play, which could be accumulated for longer rest periods .   

Despite facing physical challenges such as fatigue and stomach discomfort, Onakoya remained resolute. He was buoyed by the unwavering support of Nigerians both at home and abroad, as well as global chess enthusiasts who followed the event through live streams on platforms like Twitch. The atmosphere in Times Square was electric, with supporters providing music, food, and encouragement throughout the marathon .
